Custom Pipe Relining Across Complex Vessel Systems

Tunnel Vision was engaged by a specialist marine engineering contractor to provide trenchless pipe rehabilitation across a range of vessel systems where conventional pipe replacement would have been difficult, disruptive or unnecessarily invasive.

The works involved multiple pipe types, diameters and configurations, ranging from approximately 50mm scupper and water lines through to large-diameter exhaust-water pipework.

Because marine vessels contain tightly integrated services within limited spaces, every repair required careful assessment of access, pipe dimensions, surrounding finishes and the function of the individual system.

Over several project stages, Tunnel Vision adapted CIPP pipe relining techniques to suit the vessel’s unique internal geometry and operating requirements.

The Challenge

Marine pipe rehabilitation presents challenges that differ significantly from conventional underground drainage work.

The affected vessel systems included:

  • Scupper drainage lines
  • Potable-water feed lines
  • Bilge-related pipework
  • Sonar-related pipework
  • Stern discharge lines
  • Larger exhaust-water pipework
  • Other difficult-to-access internal vessel piping

Several of the original scupper lines were approximately 50mm in diameter and required mechanical milling before relining. Twelve individual scupper lines were located along the sides of the vessel, while additional rear scupper lines incorporated junctions and several metres of pipework.

Access was another major constraint.

Some works were undertaken while the vessel remained in the water, requiring installation methodology and timing to be adapted around the vessel’s position and operational requirements. The exterior surfaces of the vessel also had to be protected during installation. During one stage of the works, technicians installed protective sheeting around discharge points to prevent resin from contacting newly painted vessel surfaces.

Later repairs presented a different technical challenge. Large exhaust-water pipework initially identified at approximately 400mm was found during installation to vary in diameter through the pipe, meaning a conventional fixed-size liner would not provide the best result. Tunnel Vision reassessed the pipe on site and selected a stretch-liner solution capable of accommodating the changing dimensions.

The Solution

Tunnel Vision used a combination of CCTV inspection, mechanical milling, cleaning and custom CIPP relining to rehabilitate the affected marine pipework internally.

Before relining, each section was inspected and prepared using CCTV and specialist milling equipment.

Depending on the pipe size and geometry, custom felts, bladders and flexible liners were then prepared specifically for the repair.

The work included installation of sectional liners within approximately 50mm scupper lines, water-system pipework and larger discharge and exhaust lines.

Where the exact pipe dimensions differed from initial measurements, Tunnel Vision adapted the relining system rather than attempting to force a standard product into an unsuitable application.

On one smaller repair, the existing pipe was found during installation to be larger than expected. A stretch liner was selected to accommodate the actual pipe dimensions, with curing time extended accordingly before the bladder was removed and the completed repair verified by CCTV inspection.

Scupper and Vessel Drainage Rehabilitation

A major stage of the project involved the vessel’s approximately 50mm scupper lines.

Twelve side scupper lines required approximately 1m sectional liners, with six located on each side of the vessel. Additional stern pipework required specialised repairs around existing pipe features and junctions.

Six liners were initially installed and left to cure overnight. The following stage involved removal of the cured installation bladders, preparation of the remaining liners and installation of three additional liners on both the port and starboard sides.

Tunnel Vision technicians prepared the lines by milling and cleaning the existing pipework before installing custom liners.

Once cured, the liners were trimmed flush with the vessel and verified using post-installation CCTV inspection.

The wider scope also included inspection and preparation of water tank feed lines, bilge-related pipework and a sonar dropper, demonstrating the ability to work across several different vessel systems during the same project period.

Large-Diameter Exhaust-Water Relining

Tunnel Vision was later engaged to rehabilitate large exhaust-water lines protruding through the side of the vessel.

The initial scope involved two approximately 400mm relines, with the completed installation to be verified by CCTV inspection. The liner materials had to be specifically manufactured and freighted for the application.

During detailed site inspection, the team identified that the pipe dimensions changed through the line.

Rather than proceeding with a liner that was not ideally suited to the varying internal diameter, Tunnel Vision reassessed the repair and selected a specialist stretch-liner system.

Marine growth and deposits were removed from the larger pipework during preparation before the custom liner was installed.

The first large liner was subsequently installed within approximately 375mm pipework and left to cure overnight before completion of the remaining works.

Protecting the Vessel During Repairs

Working within the marine environment required more than simply repairing the pipe.

Tunnel Vision’s technicians coordinated works around other vessel trades and protected newly finished surfaces throughout the relining process.

Pipe outlets were protected during resin installation, work areas were cleaned after each stage, liners were trimmed and finished to suit existing flanges and external surfaces, and completed installations were inspected internally using CCTV.

This allowed pipe rehabilitation to be completed internally while minimising interference with surrounding vessel structures and finishes.

The Result

The project demonstrated the flexibility of CIPP technology across a diverse range of marine applications.

Tunnel Vision was able to rehabilitate pipework ranging from approximately 50mm vessel drainage and water lines through to large-diameter exhaust-water pipework without relying on extensive removal and replacement of surrounding vessel infrastructure.

The work also demonstrated the importance of adapting the relining system to actual site conditions. When pipe dimensions, geometry or curing conditions differed from expectations, the installation methodology and liner selection were modified to suit the asset.

The ongoing engagement across multiple vessel systems and project stages demonstrates the value of a repair approach that combines specialist CCTV inspection, mechanical preparation and customised trenchless relining within complex marine environments.
