Fremantle Port Precinct Significance
The Fremantle port precinct is one of Western Australia’s most significant heritage sites, and keeping its historic infrastructure intact is no small task. When a major refurbishment project at a heritage-listed port building was brought to a standstill by a deteriorating stormwater culvert drain, Tunnel Vision was called in to find a solution.
The 36-metre brick culvert, believed to date back to the late 1800s; was severely cracked and had whole bricks missing, making it unlikely to survive the vibrations caused by installing new sheet piling.
Rather than the disruptive option of decommissioning the drain entirely, Tunnel Vision developed a custom arch liner using Sumoline resin, capable of structurally restoring the damaged asset without excavation.
Working in tidal conditions and against the clock, the team completed the reline in nine days; getting the renovation project back on track and preserving the integrity of the heritage site above.
Tasks Completed
- Camera inspection of the existing brick culvert drain
- Developed a custom liner to suit the unique arch shape (1100 x 900mm)
- Managed resin wet-out process using a refrigerated container to extend working time
- Installed 36m structural reline using Sumoline resin, completed in 6m sections
- Worked with tidal conditions throughout the installation
- Applied Nuflow smooth trowel finish to seal liner ends and prevent water ingress
- Fully restored the culvert drain, allowing the broader renovation project to proceed
